Jon Stewart is on Twitter, racking up followers by the tens of thousands and picking sides in the GameStop saga

Former longtime “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart just joined Twitter — screen name: @jon_actual; followers: 845,800 and counting, rapidly — and is already staking out controversial ground, setting low expectations and suggesting he’s embarked on a path to the presidency.

His very first tweet, posted late Thursday, weighs in on the GameStop
GME,
+67.87%

saga, taking the side of the Reddit users who have banded together in an effort to break the backs of the hedge funds and others selling the videogame retailer short.

Stewart’s second tweet promised his presence on the social-media platform would be sporadic and ineffectual, and his third, nodding at the uptake his first tweets had attained, concluded it’s time he starts measuring for Oval Office drapes.

Stewart ended his 16-year run at the Comedy Central anchor desk in 2015 and since that time has advocated for 9/11 first responders and their families as well as for military veterans and inked film and TV production deals with the likes of HBO and then Apple
AAPL,
-3.74%
.

And, with that, Stewart has exceeded 855,000 Twitter
TWTR,
-2.02%

followers.
